Other bird in Big City Birds App spotted by ysc on 30.01.2023

Other bird spotted by ysc: “Magpies sleeping with the lights on. A family 6 magpies have chosen a relatively short tree with a streetlamp directly above as their nightly home. The magpies have returned to this tree during most nights for the past 1 year (breeding season excepted). This is despite the magpies having a firm grasp of this territory where there are many taller trees and trees with greater canopy. Location-wise, this tree is in the middle of a residential area, with cars and foot traffic from the street below. I have seen them dive downwards to defend their home from noisy pedestrians at 12AM. The light also visually exposes them when they’re asleep. Clearly, this tree has some disadvantageous and again, there are alternative trees nearby that are taller, without lights and located in grasslands devoid of cars and foot traffic. So considering the many disadvantageous, their continued return to said tree leads to a likely explanation that these magpies prefer sleeping with the lights on.” in the Big City Birds App on 30.01.2023
